Thibault Liger Belair
Domaine Liger-Belair has an impressive history dating back no less than 250 years. Founded in 1720 by the mayor of Nuits-Saint-Georges, the property has been in the family for five generations. Thibault Liger-Belair joined the family business in 2001, taking over the vineyards as winemaker and founding Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair. Before his career as a winemaker, Thibault Liger-Belair studied viticulture and oenology and worked for a communications company in Paris. He even sold wines on the internet, but in 2001 he decided to follow his true passion: making wine himself.
In 2002, wine was harvested for the first time from the vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Charmottes and Vosne-Romanée Aux Reas. In 2003, the domain was expanded to include prestigious parcels such as Richebourg Grand Cru, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Petits Monts and Bourgogne Rouge. In 2009, the portfolio was expanded to include Beaujolais.
Domaine Liger-Belair customises its different appellations, with the specific soil and climate determining the approach. The growth of the vines is closely monitored and yields are deliberately kept low to guarantee the quality of the wines. The Domaine works according to organic principles and is certified.
Thibault Liger-Belair ensures that the grapes arrive at the winery in perfect condition. He favours infusion over extraction as he believes that grapes that are treated with care produce the best wines. The choice of wood for the barrels is also crucial. The barrels are made exclusively from wood that has been dried for three years, which contributes to excellent tannin quality and produces silky, delicate wines. The wines are aged for between 14 and 18 months without aeration or stirring and are not filtered, adding to their purity and finesse.
