Henri Magnien

Domaine Magnien is a relatively small estate with around 6 hectares of vineyards in the prestigious Gevrey-Chambertin region. The Magnien family has been involved in viticulture since 1600, but the Domaine in its current form was founded by Henri Magnien in 1987. Today it is run by Charles Magnien, the 12th generation of the Magnien family, who continues the craft of his ancestors. The estate primarily owns old vines in the Gevrey-Chambertin and Corton appellations. The family has its own Pinot Noir clone, “Pinot Magnien”. This grape variety with thick skins and little juice produces wines with intensity and concentration.

Charles Magnien has been running the family estate since 2009 and is part of a new generation of winemakers. He combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques and a keen eye for the environment and terroir. The wines from Domaine Magnien are a wonderful expression of this approach. They have great depth, suppleness and elegance. The use of new oak barrels is classic, but with moderate extraction, giving the wines a refined and sincere expression of Pinot Noir. This grape variety thrives particularly well in Gevrey-Chambertin, where the wines find their classic power and finesse.

What particularly characterises the estate is its ownership of old vines, with the Pinot Noir Magnien being between 70 and 100 years old. These vines give the wines a unique strength and flavour. This means they can be drunk young, but also have great ageing potential. Despite the winery’s relatively young age, the wines are already of impressive quality. They are an authentic and elegant reflection of the Gevrey-Chambertin terroir.
