Henri Gouges

Domaine Henri Gouges is considered one of the great classics of Nuits-Saint-Georges and one of the most respected domaines in the Côte de Nuits. The foundations of the company were laid in the 1920s by Henri Gouges himself, a visionary who not only shaped the domaine but also played a key role in the creation of the AOC system in Burgundy. His legacy is felt to this day: tradition, integrity and a deep respect for terroir are central.

Gouges’ wines are known for their sérieux and ability to age beautifully. The domaine owns some 14 hectares of vineyards, located almost entirely in Nuits-Saint-Georges, with an exceptional range of Premier Crus. Les Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains, Les Chaignots and Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges form the heart of the property and perfectly illustrate the different faces of the appellation: powerful, earthy, but always refined and precise. The monopole Clos des Porrets is the house’s calling card in this respect.

The working method at Gouges is classic but extremely thoughtful. Strict selection is carried out in the vineyard, with low yields and a focus on healthy, perfectly ripe grapes. Since the 1990s, it has worked without herbicides and has greatly increased its focus on biodiversity. In the cellar, traditional vinification follows, with full de-stemming, long macerations and a controlled wood ageing. New oak is used sparingly and never dominantly. Maturation typically lasts 12 to 18 months, after which the wines are bottled unhurriedly.

Stylistically, Henri Gouges’ wines are recognisable and uncompromising. They combine the distinctive structure of Nuits-Saint-Georges with striking clarity and freshness. Aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, violets and earthy notes combine with tight minerality and firm but fine-grained tannins. In their youth they can be closed and austere, but with bottle aging they unfold into layered, complex Bourgognes with great depth. A domaine that seduces not with superficial charm, but with character, precision and timeless class. A benchmark for lovers of serious red Burgundy.
