Nuits-Saint-Georges

A Village appellation in the Côte de Nuits. Nuits-Saint-Georges can be split into two parts, the village itself being the dividing line. The northern part extends to the border with Vosne-Romanée, and the southern part lies partly in Nuits-Saint-Georges and partly in Premeaux. Within the appellation, red wine is mainly produced. A few winemakers also focus on white, but white wine is rare there. Nuits-Saint-Georges is a small and lively village where wine has been made for centuries. It gets its name from its patron saint, Saint Georges. The AOC dates back to September 1936. The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, Burgundy’s most famous wine company, was founded here in 1934.

The reds are crimson in colour, with aromas of liquorice and roses. Young, cherry and strawberry are added. These notes often disappear as the wine ages. Then notes of plum, leather and truffle emerge. A Nuits-Saint-Georges is a powerful – sometimes tough – full-bodied wine. It comes into its own best after several years of aging. The white wines are also powerful and have a strong golden colour.

The soils in the northern part mostly consist of gravelly material and silty deposits of the Meuzin. In the south, we find more marl. On the higher vineyards, rocks are exposed. The vineyards face east and southeast at an altitude of about 250 metres. The appellation is about 300 hectares, of which only 10 are used for Chardonnay. There are 41 Premiers Cru climates.
