Joseph Roty

Domaine Joseph Roty is one of the oldest wine families in Burgundy. The Roty family dates back to 1710 and has cultivated the same vineyards for 11 generations. After Joseph Roty’s death in 2008, his son Philippe took over the estate. He continues his father’s traditional production methods with a tireless commitment to quality and authenticity. The family owns 12 hectares of vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. Some of these are planted with the oldest vines in the region. One of the estate’s most exclusive cuvées, Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes, comes from Pinot Noir vines planted as early as 1881.

In addition to the Domaine Joseph Roty brand, the family has also launched Domaine Philippe Roty, which focuses more on Marsannay. The Roty family is known for its reclusive lifestyle. They avoid the public, have little contact with their neighbours and are not influenced by outside trends or criticism. Bureaucracy and outsiders are viewed with suspicion and interviews with journalists are a rarity.

The wines of Domaine Joseph Roty are produced with the utmost care. Yields are deliberately low and some grapes are aged in new charred oak barrels. The winemaking process is meticulous. After a rigorous sorting, where only the best grapes are left, the grapes are cold macerated for a long week. Only then does fermentation begin, which takes place at a surprisingly low temperature. For decades, Joseph Roty wines have been among the favourites of exclusive wine collectors and connoisseurs around the world. Although the mysterious character of the winery contributes to its appeal, it is ultimately the exceptional quality of the wines that makes their reputation undeniable.
