Domaine des Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is an iconic winery that makes its wines available exclusively on allocation. Today, it is run by Léa Lafon and her nephew Pierre, who took over from the renowned Dominique Lafon. This talented winemaker lifted the domaine to unprecedented heights, working on small, carefully managed plots. The domaine covers a total of 14 hectares across Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie and Chassagne-Montrachet, with the crown jewel being the monopole vineyard Clos de la Barre in Meursault.
Lafon has been working organically since 1995, with official biodynamic certification since 1998. The current, fifth generation continues this philosophy unabated. After all, healthy soil and strong vines are essential for optimal expression of the terroir – and thus for wines of the highest quality. To keep the balance in the vineyards, yields are limited and soils are ploughed regularly so that the roots grow deeper and the vines grow stronger.
The vines have an average age of 40 years and are on soils of hard limestone and clay, characteristic of Meursault. Lafon deliberately keeps yields low – 35 hl/ha on average over the past decade – and harvests the grapes fully ripe to avoid excessive acidity. Both new and used oak is used to age the wines, maturing for around 16 months. Bâtonnage is kept to a minimum and occurs at most towards the end of fermentation. Thanks to the cold cellars, fermentation proceeds slowly, contributing to the finesse and complexity of the wines.
Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s wines are seen worldwide as a benchmark for other winemakers – a model of craftsmanship and terroir expression.
