Meursault

Meursault is a famous appellation in the Côte de Beaune. Almost only white wines come from it. It is a Village appellation, with 19 Premier Cru’s. Meursault has no Grand Cru classification. Although some Premier Crus appear to have the quality of Grand Crus, winemakers in the appellation do not want to adhere to the Grand Cru classification.

The land was planted with vines as early as 1098 by the monks of Cîteaux. Like then, Meursault is still known for its white wines of exceptional quality. The wine has a green-gold colour, which can change to more yellowish the longer it is aged. Meursault is often described as a rich – sometimes oily – wine. Its signature flavours are honey, dried fruit and butter. The creamy side of a Meursault creates this soft sensation on the palate. The wines are long and structured and take time to mature. Great wines to keep so. Aged in oak, something reflected in the palette.

The soil consists of clay, marl and marbled limestone. Something that enhances the expression of the Chardonnay grape. With slopes ranging from 200 to about 350 metres altitude. The appellation has existed since 1937 and is almost 400 hectares, only 10 hectares are used for Pinot Noir. The rest is Chardonnay.
