Bourgogne (appellations régionales)

When grapes from Burgundy do not come from specific Village, Premier Cru, or Grand Cru appellations, the resulting wine is often labeled simply as “Bourgogne.” These are known as regional appellations (appellation régionale). And there are quite a few of them. A significant number of regional appellations are classified with an additional dénomination géographique complémentaire. Examples include Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Côte d’Or, or Côtes d’Auxerre. In such cases, the label will still include the word “Bourgogne,” as in “Bourgogne Côtes d’Auxerre.”

The label may also read “Bourgogne Pinot Noir.” This is a generic designation that can be used for wines made anywhere from the northern tip of the Yonne to the southern edge of the Beaujolais—as long as the grapes are grown within Burgundy. In general, it can be said that a “Bourgogne Pinot Noir” or a “Bourgogne Chardonnay”—the most generic categories—do not usually match the quality of wines with more precise geographical designations, such as “Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits.”

In total, around 50 percent of all Burgundian wines (Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée) fall under a regional appellation. Villages, Premiers Crus, and Grands Crus rank higher in the hierarchy. The appellation system is subject to occasional (and limited) change—for example, a regional appellation may be elevated to Village status.

Regional appellations can be very interesting. First of all, because they often show characteristics not found in Village wines. They have their own unique identity. They are also generally more affordable than Village wines, and especially compared to Premiers or Grands Crus. Finally, these wines are often crafted by highly skilled winemakers—the same winemakers who also vinify wines higher up in the pyramid. A producer of “Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune,” for instance, may also make Meursaults or Montrachets. That’s why so-called “simple” Bourgognes from talented producers can be particularly enjoyable: good wine at a relatively modest price.
