Maltroye Castle

Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Chassagne-Montrachet, Château de la Maltroye immediately catches the eye with its distinctive glazed roof tiles. The castle dates back to the 15th century and was remodelled in the 18th century, although the original cellar was preserved. This historic cellar is still used today to store wine. The vineyards are located on the hills behind the castle, where the first wines were produced by Marcel Picard and his brother. In 1993, Jean-Pierre Cournut took over the property and carried out a complete renovation of the vineyards and winery. His goal: to produce wines that do justice to the estate’s rich heritage.

With over 14 hectares in Chassagne-Montrachet and 2 hectares in Santenay, Château de la Maltroye is one of the leading wineries in the region. A full 70 per cent of its production consists of Premier Cru or Grand Cru wines. The vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir on 5.5 hectares and Chardonnay on 9 hectares. The château owns a small parcel in the prestigious Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru and no less than 10 Premier Cru parcels. The vines have an average age of 40 years.

Sustainability is at the centre of the Château de la Maltroye concept. Yields are deliberately kept low and the grapes are harvested by hand. The winery is equipped with modern technology such as pneumatic presses, stainless steel tanks with automatic racking systems and thermoregulation for optimal vinification. The wines are a pure expression of their terroir. Chardonnay wines are lush and mineral, while Pinot Noir wines are characterised by elegance, ripe red fruit and earthy notes.
