Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is one of the most respected domaines in Burgundy, with a history dating back to the 19th century. Since Frédéric Mugnier revived the family estate in 1985, he has worked his way up with quiet dedication to become one of the icons of Chambolle-Musigny. The domaine’s style is unparalleled in its elegance, transparency and precision.
The domaine covers some 14 hectares, with plots in Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges and the prestigious Grand Cru Musigny, among others. Mugnier works with a deep respect for the terroir: the vineyards are managed without herbicides, with minimal intervention and with great attention to biodiversity. In his approach to viticulture and vinification, restraint plays the leading role. Mugnier lets nature do the work, intervening only when absolutely necessary.
In the cellar, he continues that philosophy. No pumping, minimal extraction, only native yeasts, and a subtle use of oak, usually with only 20 per cent new wood. Maturation typically lasts 18 to 20 months, with patience and calm being key. For Mugnier, winemaking is not about power but about conveying a feeling, a pure expression of origin, season and soul.
Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier’s wines are nimble and delicate, but with a profound complexity that reveals itself fully only with aging. They require attention and time, but richly reward the lover. Young, they are already fascinating, with floral notes, a gossamer structure and unprecedented precision. Old, they become almost poetic. The labels look classic and understated, just like the maker himself – a man who prefers to let his wines speak rather than speak for themselves.
