Tortochot Estate

Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Tortochot has a long history of winemaking dating back to the 19th century. Paul Tortochot founded the family business in Place des Marroniers, and today the fourth generation runs the estate under the inspiring leadership of Chantal Tortochot. Paul’s great-granddaughter. Chantal Tortochot is a passionate oenologist and represents the new generation of winemakers in Burgundy with a keen eye for terroir and sustainability.

The domain covers around 12 hectares, spread over dozens of parcels ranging from regional appellations to prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. The absolute star of the domain is Pinot Noir, from which all the wines are made. Tortochot owns some of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards, including Clos de Vougeot, Charmes-Chambertin and Mazis-Chambertin. Viticulture and winemaking are carried out with great respect for Burgundian traditions. The vines are planted close together and low to the ground, as is customary in the region. Pruning plays a crucial role: It determines the balance between leaf area and the number of grapes per vine, which determines the quality and concentration of the grapes.

All grapes are harvested by hand and destemmed completely. During vinification, the grapes are first soaked in cold water (cuvaison) for four to five days to extract as much colour, aroma and flavour as possible from the skins. Fermentation takes place using only natural yeast, after which the wines are aged in oak barrels in the cellar. Only new French oak is used for the Grand Cru wines, which further increases their complexity and ageing potential.

Domaine Tortochot masterfully combines tradition and innovation to deliver wines that perfectly reflect the unique expression of Gevrey-Chambertin.
