Coche-Dury
Coche-Dury is among the absolute best of white Burgundies. Due to limited availability, these wines are not cheap, but their almost mythical reputation makes them some of the most sought-after in the world. The domaine was founded in the 1920s by Léon Coche in Meursault. In 1964, his son Georges took over and expanded the property with new plots. In 1973, the baton passed to Jean-François Coche, who, together with his wife Odile Dury, continued to put the domaine on the map. Her surname was even included in the domain name. Since 2010, the winery has been run by their son Raphaël, who continues the tradition.
Coche-Dury’s wines are extremely sought-after. Not only in Europe, but also in Asia and the United States. Some even see them as an investment, as their value continues to rise. The domaine produces its wines in Meursault and has parcels in Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie and Volnay. Its most iconic wine is undoubtedly Coche-Dury Meursault, while the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has now achieved cult status. In addition to its famous white wines, Coche-Dury also makes red wines, such as an Auxey-Duresses Pinot Noir, which are – relatively speaking – even slightly more affordable. In total, the domaine covers some 12 hectares, of which over 6 hectares are dedicated to Meursault.
Coche-Dury harvests early in the season and always by hand. Yields are low, and the wines mature for at least 18 months in oak barrels. A relatively large amount of new wood is used in the process. This is not to influence the flavour, but to extend the storage potential and create a pure base for the perfect fruit. The wines are bottled by hand, without filtering. Coche-Dury’s style is unmistakable: tight and layered, with notes of hazelnuts and creamy textures. Finished by an exceptionally long finish. A winery that excels not only in craftsmanship, but also in mystique.
