Saint-Romain

Saint-Romain is a Village appellation in the Côte de Beaune. It was one of the first places in Burgundy where Celts and Romans grew grapes. Both white and red wines are produced there. Labels often include the name of the Climat. Think Au Bas de Poillange, Combe Bazin and, for example, La Croix Neuve.

The vines are on sloping terrain where they benefit from excellent soil. This consists of a mix of limestone, marl and clay. The Chardonnay grape thrives here, as does Pinot Noir. The vineyards face mainly south-east at altitudes ranging from 280 to almost 400 metres.

Pinot Noir here produces intense ruby red wines with an elegant fruity nose. The white wines are pale gold in colour with mineral notes. Over time, the wines soften. So imposing for a while won’t hurt. There are no Premier Cru classifications, but there are Climats that produce higher-quality wines. It is a small appellation with about 100 hectares of area.
