Marsannay

At the top of the Côte de Nuits lies Marsannay. A Village appellation where white, red and rosé are all made. But where red predominates. Intense in colour and a bouquet where red and black fruits blend smoothly. The red wines are produced exclusively on the slopes of Marsannay-la-Côte, Chenôve and Couchey. The appellation is considered the “Golden Gateway to the Côte de Nuits”.

Wine has been made in Marsannay since the 7th century. The abbey of Bèze, the bishop of Autun, the dukes of Burgundy and many others owned vineyards here, and the wines found their way to the tables of Louis XIV and Louis XVl. In the 19th century, some Climats enjoyed a classification equivalent to today’s Grands Cru.

The soil consists of limestone gravel, limestone, petrified clay and marble. The soil composition is very diverse and can vary from climat to climat. Red Marsannay has an intense colour and is often powerful. It doesn’t hurt to drink them only after several years. The vineyards stretch from north to south along the best parts of the hillside. The vineyards are at about 250 to 400 metres altitude. The appellation covers an area of about 250 hectares, of which 190 hectares are used for reds.
