Gevrey-Chambertin

A famous village appellation on the Côte de Nuits. This appellation produces exclusively red wines. Of Pinot Noir, of course. Many say that the Pinot Noir grape thrives best here. Wine has been produced in this region since 640. Gevrey-Chambertin is a sort of guard of honour for a number of great Grands Crus such as Chambertin and Clos de Bèze.

The wine is ruby red when young, but changes colour to deep crimson or dark cerise with age. The massive – but velvety – tannins in Gevrey-Chambertin give the wine strength and firmness. They also contribute to its long shelf life. This is a wine for carnivores, and its gamey notes give it a special affinity with game.

The soil consists of limestone and marlstone. The vines are favoured by marl covered with gravel and red mud washed down from the plateau. These blends give the wine elegance and finesse, while the clay marl, which contains rich deposits of fossilised shells, gives Gevrey-Chambertin body and firmness. There are no fewer than 26 Premiers Cru areas in the appellation. The wines are produced in two communes: Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon. The commune of Gevrey-Chambertin has no less than nine Grands Cru appellations. The Village appellation covers more than 400 hectares.
