Bouzeron

Bouzeron is a small appellation in the north of the Côte Chalonnaise, on the border with the Côte de Beaune. It is the only AOC in Burgundy that focuses exclusively on Aligoté, and specifically the local variety Aligoté Doré. This grape is known for its higher quality and fuller expression compared to the more common Aligoté Vert, and although Bouzeron is geographically closer to Rully and Mercurey, it shows a striking affinity in freshness and elegance with wines from the higher elevations of the Côte de Beaune.

Bouzeron wines are typically pale gold in colour, with subtle green hues. They are characterised by lively acidity, tight minerality and aromas of citrus, white flowers and fresh herbs. As they age, they develop more roundness and notes of honey and almond, but they almost always remain refined and energetic.

The vineyards are situated on slopes of 270 to 350 metres altitude, often in east- or south-east exposition. The soil consists of limestone and marl, which contributes to the wine’s lean, mineral character. The relatively cool microclimate helps the Aligoté Doré retain its distinctive freshness. Summers are hot but not overly dry, and nights generally cool sharply – ideal for aroma development and acidity retention.

The appellation covers about 60 hectares and has existed since 1998. Today, Bouzeron is considered the benchmark for serious, gourmet Aligoté. Refined, refreshing and with plenty of depth.
