Beaune

Beaune forms the historical and geographical heart of the Côte de Beaune. Centrally located in the Côte d’Or, the appellation surrounds the town of the same name, which has served as the commercial and cultural centre of Burgundy for centuries. Beaune is best known for its red wines made from Pinot Noir, although it also produces a smaller proportion of white wine from Chardonnay. Beaune’s style combines accessibility with classic Burgundy finesse.

Beaune wines typically show a bright ruby colour and aromatic expression of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, complemented by floral notes, spices and earthy nuances. On the palate, they are elegant and balanced, with refined tannins and fresh acids. With ageing, they develop more complex aromas of forest floor, leather and spice, while retaining their vibrancy.

The vineyards are situated on gently sloping slopes between 220 and 300 metres in altitude, with mainly east to south-east exposition. The soils consist of limestone and clay, with local variations evident in the many climates. Beaune has no fewer than 42 Premier Cru vineyards, giving the appellation exceptional diversity.

With around 450 hectares of vineyard, Beaune is one of the largest appellations in the Côte d’Or. The wines combine structure, charm and terroir expression and are considered a textbook example of classic, gourmet Burgundy.
