Bâtard-Montrachet
One of the most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, Bâtard-Montrachet is part of the Montrachet family. This family consists of five Grands Cru grown in the two villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The two villages share the appellations Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. Chevalier-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet belong to Puligny-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet belongs to Chassagne-Montrachet.
These Grands Cru are the southernmost of the Côte de Beaune and lie between Meursault in the north and Santenay in the south. Their origins date back to the Middle Ages. The wines of Montrachet – pronounced Mon-rachay – came fully into their own in the 17th century. There is no debate: this is the best expression of the Chardonnay grape anywhere!
Bâtard-Montrachet wines are known for their powerful, rich and full-bodied character. They offer aromas of ripe yellow fruit such as peach and apricot, along with notes of honey, hazelnut and a subtle mineral touch. The structure is often impressive, with a full body and a long, silky finish perfectly balanced by refined acidity. These wines have great ageing potential and can gain complexity over the years.
The soil in Bâtard-Montrachet consists of a mix of limestone and clay, it is rich in minerals that give the wine intense depth and finesse. The vineyards are at an altitude of around 240 to 250 metres and enjoy a southeast exposure. This unique terroir, together with careful vinification by some of Burgundy’s leading winemakers, makes Bâtard-Montrachet one of the most extraordinary and sought-after white wines in the world. The appellation dates back to 1937 and is only 10 hectares in size.
