Montagny

Montagny is a Village appellation and is located in the Côte Chalonnaise. It only produces white wines. Wines can come from Montagny, Buxy, Saint-Vallerin and Jully-lès-Buxy and the appellation has 49 Premier Crus. The AOC has existed since 1936. Wine has been made in the area since the 12th century, again it was the monks of Cluny who first recognised the area’s potential and started planting vines.

Montagny is known for its freshness and bright colour. Pale gold in colour when young, but darker as the wine ages. With rich aromas of acacia, blackberry and mayflower. Notes of flint are also often mentioned as a characteristic of the wine. They are lively, delicate and refined wines, renowned for their structure.

The soil consists of limestone, the vines are mainly planted to the east and south-east at altitudes between 250 and 400 metres. Marl and chalk alternate, sometimes accompanied by gravel. That the Chardonnay grape thrives here is obvious. Kimmeridgian limestone is also found there. The appellation covers over 350 hectares, of which over 200 hectares are used for Premier Cru.
