Corton-Charlemagne
Corton-Charlemagne is located on the border of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. The Grand Cru appellation is located in the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. Corton-Charlemagne exclusively produces white wines. White wines of exceptional quality.
When young, the wine is pale gold in colour with green highlights. As the wine ages, the colour shifts to yellow or amber. The bouquet has buttery notes of baked apple, citrus, pineapple, lime, fern, juniper, cinnamon and flint. Honey notes are also often present.
Corton-Charlemagne is named after Emperor Charlemagne, who once owned the hill of Corton on which the vines now stand. The first mention of a Clos de Charlemagne dates back to 1375. The slopes with the most valuable vineyards are on the southeastern part of the hilltop. The slopes are steep and composed of Jurassic layers. The colour of the clay-rich marl soils ranges from yellow and ochre to brown. Limestone is interspersed with marl under a thin layer of rendzinas. A perfect synthesis between grape and terroir. This produces rich, powerful and concentrated wines.
The wines are world-famous and highly sought-after. Moreover, they are wines that can still reveal new flavours after 25 years. Wines with storage potential, in other words! The appellation is small, covering less than 60 hectares and dating back to 1937.
