Volnay
The name Volnay is derived from the god of water, Volen. Volnay is a Village appellation from the Côte de Beaune. The village of Volnay lies between two other famous villages, Meursault and Pommard. Volnay is often described as a feminine fresh and silky wine that can be drunk young. Volnay’s vineyards have been considered exceptional for centuries, and as early as the 18th century, the typicality of the wine was established. In 1937, Volnay got its own appellation. It lies atop the hill of Chaignot. This is very steep, but perfect for the south-east facing vines. There are no Grand Cru parcels, but which some fantastic Premier Cru vineyards. The appellation is fraternised with Volnay-Santenots, planted in neighbouring Meursault on land equally suited to Pinot Noir.
Volnay ranges in colour from ruby red to light garnet. With aromas of violets, gooseberries, cherries and – after years – spicy aromas are added. The wines are great for aging, but they are also open and fruity when young, making them pleasant to drink.
The soil around Volnay is diverse and has different layers. Limestone, marl and clay, among others, are found there. Also gravel and gravel, especially in the lower-lying areas. On higher hills, it is mostly limestone. The vineyards are around 250 metres above sea level. The appellation covers over 200 hectares, of which over 130 hectares have a Premier Cru classification.
